72,000+ were made between 1921 & 1933, according to the Remington book.

Thanks! Surely not like an 870! Only made in 20 gauge I heard, but there is no gauge marking on it.

The Model 17 was 20 gauge only. I have the one Dad bought new but mine has somewhat less blue left than yours. I shot a lot of rabbits and a few quail with mine when I was in my early teens using 7/8 ounce #6 shot. Since I valued the 17 too much to have it messed up any more, I bought an Ithaca 37 to start my kids with.

I believe thats an offshoot of the Remington 15, which John Browning designed. Then the patents expired and Ithaca came out with the Model 37, well after Mr. Browning's death. Its amazing what that man thought up and built.

    It's actually a 20ga version of the Model 10
