1911 amc amigo
got mine today. it came with alot of grease on it. i want to break it down and clean it so what do you suggest i use to get all the grease off?

Simple Green, it's non toxic and does a good job. You can use it indoors, without gloves, and cleans up easily with paper towels. 0 -
A tooth brush and hot air hair dryer work pretty well. 0 -
If you use anything to cut grease Make sure you don't leave ANY PART of ANY of the number of PARTS dry. SEMI AUTO pistols have moving parts and on any newly machined parts they will wear quickly without LUBE.
OIL IS YOUR FRIEND. TRY wiping outside of pistol with paper towel and then shoot as it was shipped.
EDITSandwarrior brings up a good point ,about a dry barrel .Again I am of different opinion from many people . No I don't leave heavy grease or dripping oil in my 1911 barrel But I do have a match pistol that has over 300,000 rounds through it . Most with lead loads
all lead loads need bullet lube. Many people use Lee molds that use bullets DIPPED in lube. So my question to you is what is different from shooting a bullet through a barrel with a thin film of oil or one that has had a Bullet dipped in lube [?][?] When you build an engine you don't put all the parts together DRY and start it up the first time then after it is run shut engine off and install the oil.
AGAIN "OIL IS YOUR FRIEND " on something like a 22/250 rifle maybe dry bore is needed but we are talking about a 45ACP round at less then 1000 FPS. FLAME ON I CAN TAKE THE HEAT[;)][;)]0 -

??? You'd want to at least patch out the barrel until clean and dry? correct? Using solvent on the first 1-2, then clean patches.0 -

I have used both, and they are descent lubricants/cleaners. But to remove grease, specially if it's caked-on you need a solvent. Simple Green, a G.I. toothbrush, elbow grease and paper towels should do the trick long as it's not cosmoline or some other heavy duty preservative.

how much of the simple green do u mix with water to clean the gun? i picked some up 0 -
