...I hate to ask such a mundane question, but I just can't recall
what year I bought the gun. It is marked Winchester, not USRA,
on the barrel and butt pad. It's a carbine, short action in .223.
Ser. # G 1720666. Thanks for any light you may shed, short of getting
a factory letter.

The serial number is well into the USRACo. production period. Winchester production ended in late 1980 in the 1.52-million serial number range. 0 -
...Thank Bert. I gathered from one of links here that is was in the
USRA range, However, the barrel and pad are marked Winchester, and I bought the gun new. No USRA markings are to be seen.
Did USRA use up the Win. marked parts before they were changed?

I know that there were at least several thousand of the early transition rifles (in 1981) that were assembled by the USRACo. using left over Winchester parts and receivers. Exactly how many were made and how long that practice took place, I do not know.0 -
