With over 800,000 of them made, it could be a early special order.
I have not seen one yet without the model 12 and a letter(A-B-C-D) stamped on it. It might be one some 'smith cut down also.

Looks like a Model 12A "Bubba Special" to me.

Look closley at the front sight and determine if it has a professionally cut dove tail. You probably should post the pictures on the Remington collector's site.

Both front and rear sights look like factory installed, Also the barrel does not look like it was cut.

The Model 12 designation may have been assigned a couple years into production: It's listed in the 1910-1914 Sears catalogs just as a 'Hammerless Repeater' and then the same adv. 1915-on with 'Model 12' added.

Listed only with 22" round or 24" octagon barrel.

The rear sight looks modified, like the ears were radiused off to make it snag free. The elevator, does it engauge the groves on the bbl? My dad an old trapper like his 12, they always seem to point down hill to me. The 121 is the one I carry.

edit Bubba doesn't always do poor work. What are date codes?

There is no file marks on the rear sight, the elevator just sits on the barrel, no grove. Both dovetails on sights look original also,

Notice the elevator only has 3 graduation grooves.
