Kennedy .44cal

I was over at a friends house today and he pulled out an interesting OLD rifle. It says Whitneyville Armory Ct USA Kennedy. .44 calc.f. across the top of the 27" octagon barrel and Jan 17 1878 April 27 March 13 1879 on the tang. It has an absolutely beautiful serpentine lever ,kind of an s shape. This old rifle is in exceptional condition. Can anybody volunteer any information on this exquiste rifle?
