shot gun plugs
Greetings, first off Hope everyone has a very merry Christmas and best of new year!
During 2011 Ohio Deer gun season, my buddy's hunting party got paid a visit by an Ohio Division of Wildlife Officer. During a routine check, he checked to see if the pumps and autoloaders had plugs, which are required to keep capacity at 3 rounds. He made an example out of one shotgun, placed three shells in the magazine and placed half a fouth shell in, all 2 3/4" lengh. HE said that was illegal even though you could not chamber the round and not stated in rule book. He specifically said there are plugs made for 3" magnum guns and 2 3/4" ( 12 gauge) My buddys 870 12 ga with slug bbl came with factory plug and no where in directions says its for either length shell. The fact that the plug does what it is supposed served its purpose, but each got a warning and entered into computer as being warned, and to get correct plugs!! I never heard of such a thing and even seen guys stick wood sticks in to prevent more than holding 3 shells. HE had been in the area and heard all of the shooting and decided to pay a visit, everyone had hunters orange on, proper license and deer properly tagged, so i amthinking that he couldnt find any violations, and decided to have a lesson with " I'm the new Sheriff In Town" mentality. I use a single shot HR ultra slugger 12 gauge and taken two deer this season with seconds of each other, one buck and one hefty doe, season over. thanks in advance on everyones thoughts on this.

" A deer hunter CANNOT do any of the following
1. hunt or take a deer with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells. this means you may not hunt with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells, unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler which limits the capacity of the gun to three shells. The filler must be such that it cannot be removed without disassembling the gun. " page 12
now we can use certain handguns during deer gun season, must have a. have a barrel length of not less than 5 inches, b. use straight-walled cartridges ( no shoulder/ necked; straight-tapered wall is acceptable) c. be .357 caliber or larger, and (d) not be shoulder mounted. so 6 shot and 7 shot revolvers are acceptable, S&W 686+1,
there is the rule as it is written, so I would not think that this , if it were a violation would hold up in court, or unless he found multiple pieces in a gun.

I have been checked on the dove field. I used an unused No. 2 pencil which happens to be just the right length also. I was told that since I could just take off the end cap and remove the pencil that I was in violation. I did not argue, but stated that I was attempting to do the right thing. I got a warning also. I would have gone to court if necessary. Glad I did not have too. It seems there are rules and then there "rules". Some are on paper and some are what people think they are. I now use a dowel rod that requires further disassembly of the shotgun. 0 -
In both instances I think they are blowing smoke where the sun dont shine. Give um a shiney badge and a row of bullets and they think they rule everything. Not sayin they are all like that cause Ive known both kinds. But the shell either fits or it dosent. Kind of like bein pregnant or dead. There is no inbetween. You are or you aint My 2 cents. 0 -
so you can legally hold 3+1 in the chamber?
For waterfowl(federal regs) and IL regs it was two in the magazine and one in the chamber.
If you can place more than 2 shells in the magazine you are in trouble. If the third round can not be fully loaded then their is no problem.
According to your regs it was an illegal set up... The officer placed 3 shells in the magazine. It's only supposed to hold 2. Making the total 2+1=3 (legal)

I'm wondering if you got you words mixed up? Did you mean he had 2 shells in the mag & +1 in chamber?
If your state is 3 shells total(2 in mag+1 in chamber) he's legal.(I think that is what I read on your word-for-word on the law) You can't put 3 shells in mag. and put 4th half way in if plug is in, that's why I ask.
I pasted a pic of an 870 2 3/4" reciever(true size, thats why so big). I think that the CPO was stretching his authority IMHO and I would check with someone over his head before I went modifying the gun plug.
My point here....if he(CPO) couldn't fit the (3rd) smaller shell in the magizine why would he think that a bigger one would fit. It's the opposite, but if a plug was made to proper length you couldn't get 3 shells in the mag if the plug was made for all 3" shells.
3" shell= ~2.590" x2= 5.18"
2 3/4" shell= ~2.31 x2= 4.62"
So, three 2 3/4" shells(6.93") wont fit in a space thats made for two 3" shells(5.18")0 -
This thread couldn't be more useless ! A properly plugged shotgun will only hold two (2) shells in the magazine , don't make any difference if they're 2.75 or 3" . Here in Vermont the wardens carry a stick - gauge that they push into the mag with the gun unloaded , they don't fart around shoving shells into anybody's shotgun . It's a go-nogo for shotgun mags . Unfortunatly there are richard craniums wearing uniforms of authority in every state in the union ! You must have encountered a rookie , since he doesn't yet know how to check a shotgun , or how to comport himself in the field ! If he actually did fit 3 shells into that gun , somebody did get a break . 0 -
I certainly misspoke, I missed the 3 shells in the tube. Its was 2 shells in my tube, and one in the chamber. Federal birds are regulated here like everywhere else. However for other hunting, quail, deer, etc. we can have as many shells as we wanted loaded up.
