Remington 870 2 3/4in and 3 in
I am considering purchasing a Remington wing master 870. It is older and can get it for about 150 bucks. 12 Gauge. It is a 2 and 3/4 Only. If I were to purchase 3in barrel, would I be able to shoot 3in out of it? Or is it a 2 3/4 only with a 3 in barrel? I still might purchase just because I want removable chokes, this used one is a full choked barrel only. Thanks for all your help!

The 3 inch barrel has a longer barrel extension than the 2 3/4 I believe. If so it will not fit the 2 3/4 inch reciever. On the other hand, where does it say 2 3/4 inch only?...on the reciever, or the barrel? A 3 inch spent casing will not eject thru the ejection port of a 2 3/4 inch reciever ither.

If your receiver isn't stamped Magnum or have a S/N that ends with an "M" , it is for 2 3/4" shells only , regardless of what the Barrel says ! 0 -
Alright, Thank you guys! You always know your stuff!

You can probly put a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4" reciever. It may fit as long as the barrel tang on the barrel isn't sticking into the reciever too far.
The cut out on the reciever (if the 3" barrel does go on) will probly not let the shells cycle because there probly won't be enough cut out for the shells to eject when pumped.
I'm assuming the barrel dictates the saftey of the shell used. Example, (3" shell in a 2 3/4" barrel not safe)0 -
What you Ass U Me isn't so , bambambam . It has to be a Magnum receiver ! The barrel can be either , but putting a 3" barrel on a standard receiver is a bad idea . Some knothead could single feed a 3" shell into it . (not good) ! If you refer to my earlier post you'll know which receivers are safe for 3" shells . 0 -
I just cycled a fired 3" 12 ga. hull through my 2 3/4 chambered 870 5 times with no ejection problems. The ejection port is 3", the same as my 1100 2 3/4 and 3" mag. guns. The 870 bolt moves 1/8 past the opening allowing the front of the 3" hull to clear and eject. There must be a difference in gas, piston, spring and buffer parts in the 2 3/4 and 3" receivers. Can someone measure the ejection port of a 3" mag 870 and advise. 0 -
Just measured mine at 2.97. magnum reciever. I have had quite a few 2.75 bbls opened to 3 inch. Dont think I ever had a 2.75 reciever. I know there has been alot of talk on this. Personally If they fed and the bbl is a 3inch. Id shoot it. I trust Remington and faith it will be fine. I understand they dont want one to do it. People will get into 3 inch in 2.75 rec and bbls. I know for a fact 3 in will cycle in a 2.75 1100. Friend used to shoot jack rabbits with one. I dont know how long it would have lasted that was 40 years ago. 0 -
A 3" round may eject if unfired but when the crimp unfolds it will be to long to eject. 0
