You should not even be able to set the safety before cocking the gun.
Something is wrong here and they should fix it on guarantee.

Good customer service: A willingness to sell a defective product and the ability to make you feel like they have done you a favor by fixing it.

It is correct that the safety will not go 'up' until it is cocked, but to little effect if it goes 'down' when the trigger is pulled...

If you purchased the gun new I would say return it to SA and they'll repair it free of charge, shipping included.

If the gun was bought used a gunsmith who knows 1911s can fit and install a new one. Installing a 1911 safety that functions properly isn't brain surgery but a person does need to know what they're doing. Also, getting that smooth, positive "click" on & off is part of what's required to do it right.

The safety is allowing the sear to rotate. Old ones...pre MIM or investment cast...could be "stretched" by lightly striking a glancing blow with a hammer to displace the point of the lug that blocks the sear. If yours is MIM or cast, you're probably better off with a new one, correctly fitted.

And the hammer falling and knocking the thumb safety down is what happens in this instance. Normal. The thumb safety won't block the hammer.

forgemoneky...The trigger stirrup never touches the sear and the thumb safety doesn't block the trigger. It blocks the sear. The grip safety blocks the trigger.

The trigger presses the disconnect spade, which bears on the sear and moves it. The disconnect is both a connector and a disconnector...depending on whether it's up or down. Up...is the connect position. Down in the frame...it's in the disconnected position.

I recieved my pistol back from the custom shop, (fixed by the way)with the statement,"Replaced Safety", the dealer who sent it in for me, said it was the most bizarre thing he had ever seen, Super fast turn around though.

Good that it worked out and thanks for letting us know. I've owned a fair amount of Springfields and like their products. I've got to admit a bit of unease when I consider how many I've had to return for repair as compared to other manufacturers. When asked why they're so good I joke a bit and say "practice, practice, practice ...." [:o)]

    SSG ZAG,

Thank you for posting back with us regarding the customer service from Springfield. It's always nice to here positive remarks about the companies we all deal with these days.

    Best.
