What can I use to plug the barrell when bluing?

I'm using wood dowells now. They can be hard to get out.

cork but it really will not hurt to blue the inside as long as you rinse the inside well .

I'm only involved with rust blue but I never want ANY type of blue into the bore.

I fill the bore with Shellac drain it out, let dry and repeat a couple times. After the barrel is blued I soak the bore in alcohol and use alcohol patches until all the Shellac is removed.

Won't hurt the interior of the barrel (gone after one or two shots) and may be unsafe (pressure build up) if hot bluing.

YOU SHOULD NEVER PLUG THE BORE WHEN IN A HOT BLUEING TANK, PERIOD....

Air heated to 300 degrees inside of a bore should make pretty neat volcanos when the plugs blow out.[:D]

In addition to what was already said. Hot blueing or Black Oxide does not add dimensially to the surface of the metal. If anything the bath might clean out the barrel a little as long as you swab the bore at the end. Other applications like plating or parkerizing will change the interior. Parkerizing will etch the surface of the metal and will destroy the barrel. Parkerizing a barrel you have to plug the holes but the temprature of parkerizing is around 200 degrees not 285. Unless you are using an odd formula that will damage the bore, don't worry about it.

Bluing is not a coating like plating, or paint or clearcoat. You are changing the color of the surface metal through a chemical reaction. The better the polish and prep the shinier the barrel.

I have actually ran across a gun that someone had a friend re-do and when they got it back the barrel and all other metal was clear coated with polyurethane and a paint brush.[:0]

i have blued many firearms and never did i plug the barrels ,bores,etc. do you really think the manufactures do as well... i don't think so.like was said. a plug in a barrel after it gets 185deg could get very interesting.... but not in my shop.quote:Originally posted by SP45
