Magnum Research BFR?
I have a bonus royalty check coming in around the new year so I think I need one. Looking at a Magnum Research BFR 45-70, but can't choose between a 7.5" or 10" barrel, what would be better?. I'll use it for punching paper & hog hunting out to 100yds or so. What kind of scope should I look at getting that will hold up on this cannon?

Get the longer tube. I would not scope it. A wagon will work better than a holster. Load for it you will be way happier. 0 -
I would test fire one or a similar handgun chambered for 45-70, prior to buying.
I was at a range one time, a guy was shooting a Thomson Contender in 45-70. The recoil was so severe he had a hunk of bronze fastened under the barrel, to keep it under control. The muzzle blast was enough to make your eyes water also.
S & W and Ruger make large caliber revolvers that are way more practical for hunting and paper punching IMHO. A revolver chambered for the 460 S & W would suffice for hogs, and also can fire .45 LC for target shooting/plinking.0 -

I LOVE Ruger revolvers, but they can't hold a candle to the quality and craftsmanship of a BFR. Spin the cylinder on one of them things...unreal!
That being said, I have owned 2 BFR's...a 45-70 with 7.5" barrel and a .50AE with the 7.5" barrel. Both shot great and recoil was not too bad at all. I don't own either one any more because they weigh 2 tons and I don't like carrying that around the woods hunting. Might as well have a rifle. Hip holsters are out of the question with these unless you want a hip out of joint at the day's end.

The weight of it is not a big deal as I'll just drive around the fields & pop one. Another reason behind that cal is I already have the reload gear to do it & I can light load for target/plinking. What kind of range would a 10" barrel have as far as killing power? Probably farther than I can shoot accurately[:p]. 0 -

What ever range you can hold your shots in the kill zone, is the exact range it will be good to. Unless you have a lot of experience with heavy recoiling handguns, you will be regulating your shots to well within 100 yards, and possibly inside 50 yards. The power of the gun is not in question. The 45-70 is capable of accuracy great enough to at least hit a gallon jug out to 400 yards(first hand experience with 405 grain hardcast lead bullet on top of 34 grains of IMR 4198...really mild about 1400 FPS), and has ample power for anything on this planet when loaded properly, in the right firearm.
