Winchester 1890 receiver side holes

I have a Winchester 1890 with two holes on the left side of the receiver. What are they for?

    If the holes are close together they might have been for a peep sight.
    A pic or better description would tell.
    I had in mind the Williams "Foolproof Sight" which was advertised for virtually all rifles.
    This is another 20 questions post giving insufficient information.

    1890s were NEVER drilled for peep sights on the left side of the receiver.

    Hello Tucker: I suspect that you are talking about the two closely placed holes in the top center of the left receiver. You will find them in the second model variation of the 1890 and maybe some third models as well. They are pins that hold the channel bar for the action slide on the inside of the receiver. They were eliminated with the internal changes that were made on the third model receivers. They can also work clear out and then leave a hole in the left side of the receiver.

    You are incorrect... the pins (rivets) are most definitely on the left-hand side of the receiver. This might be of interest to you - http://www.winchestercollector.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4459

    I stand corrected. I was looking down the barrel. Bert is right as usual.
