38 spc s&w
a friend has a 5-screw, 6-shot, 38 special revolver.it has a trench rear sight with what i would call a half moon front sight, wood grips,and approx 2 in barrel.serial #C542xx.there is no model # on the gun and i cannot find any s&w with a C prefix in my books.can anyone help figure out the model,age,and value of this gun?cond. is 90-95%.

Sounds like a Military and Police. They didn't get model numbers until 1957. The C numbers started soon after they resumed commercial production after WW II but I don't have the book to say just when. 0 -
Your friends M&P was made about 1948-9. The two inch are a little more scarce. Value should be about $3-400. 0 -

If you are looking for that gun buy it at that price. They do not come up for sale very often with a 2" barrel. Nice gun. 0 -
Might want to take a close look to be sure the two inch barrel is the original length. Lots of these, and their cousins the Victory models, were cut down to two inch barrels from their original four or six inch length. Many were then nickeled. Learned this the hard way years ago when I bought my first nickel two inch M&P. 0 -
