VP is the long time Colt Verified Proof mark, used since about 1904. It came in about the time they OKed the SAA for smokeless powder.

P is a proofmark and the number is an inspector's stamp.
At least that is their significance on centerfire Colt autos, I could not find specifics on the Woodsman.

Is there anything else about the gun that would lead you to think it had been worked on?

Just some faint rub marks on the barrel maybe from jaws.
I lucked out on this because it had a broken firing pin that burred
the chamber, disabling the gun. It must have happened before the pistol had much use.
A RF chamber ironing tool from Brownell and a new firing pin and it's at least a 95% pistol for $350.
    Didn't know it's a John Browning design.
