Bump Shooting
Slide Fire sells a stock for your AR which allows you to "bump Shoot" your AR. Has anyone tried one of these? They look like fun. Since commercial AR's aren't built for autofire, I'm wondering what kind of damage you may do to your gun. Thanks

Commercial AR's aren't built for automatic fire only because they are not built with the parts needed to shoot full auto. They are the same guns as the automatic versions but without the parts. Shooting the commercial version at FA rates will not damage it unless you overheat it.

That's true for Colt AR's, since Colt makes all parts to USGI milspec. Most other companies have never sold rifles to the US Government, & those that have may or may not make ALL parts to USGI milspec.

So, for just the cost of this device you too can make a lot of noise, not hit anything accurately, burn up LOTS of expensive ammo, and possibly overheat and damage your rifle. Hmmm. Sounds like a good investment to me. [;)]
I don't know what the attraction is for FA fire. Most who have served in the military and used it there usually no longer get any thrill. But, I suppose the guys who have been limited to shooting FA on video games still want to hose some real bullets downrange. [:D] It's your gun, your money, and your choice (at least until some guy replaces another guy at BATFE and decides to reverse the decision on what is legal) [;)]
As with anything related with guns, my general policy is that if you can afford it and it makes you happy, buy it and shoot it. [:D]0 -
Never understood the attraction for bump fire.
Bump-fired an AK once (un-planned second round) and was unsure exactly where it went. Obviously a planned bump-fire would be a little bit more controlled, but I cannot imagine that the Slide-Fire design, with that much movement of the receiver, will yield results that approach the controllability of a select-fire weapon.0 -
The barrel nut and bolt locking lugs are in effect the receiver,containing forces of the explosions. However, the buffer absorbs rearward recoil and the rest of the frame absorbs forward slamming of the bolt carrier assembly as it goes into battery.
That frame, both upper and lower, should be 7075 T6 forgings.Some aftermarket receivers are either cast or not 7075 T6.
The steel pins holding upper and lower frames stretch their holes, loosening up the AR with a lot of shooting.
Automatic shooting has to hasten the process.
Were the recoil springs made twice as strong as they are, the AR would see greater reliability but the guns would batter themselves apart.
That, I see as one of the major tradeoffs in Stoner's design.
I'd be happier with either Titanium or steel receivers or a more secure means of tying upper and lower frames together.
Bump shooting has to hasten loosening of the fit.
I was privileged to enjoy a great deal of automatic weapons firing at Gov't expense so the need to use up ammo and parts at my expense isn't appealing.
If you thing beating up an AR is worth it, Go ahead.0 -

In a nutshell, the attraction for bump-fire and bump-fire enabling devices like "slide fire" is that these things let you get the cyclic fire rate of full-auto weapons, which are out of the reach of most shooters. Full auto guns are either outright banned (in some states), or prohibitively expensive.
In other words, bump-fire devices are like the "Cuban cigars" of firearms. A large part of the attractiveness is because of the sense of skirting a ban.
IMO for most users full auto fire is a good way to waste a lot of ammo and burn out your barrel.
Even in actual combat full-auto fire has fairly limited application. So far as I know its used mainly for suppression (eg forcing the enemy to take cover). It can also be used to "walk" bullets onto a target, but that particular technique isn't usually applied with a conventional infantry rifle like an M4/M16. Its potentially useful with submachine guns to multiply the power of individually low-power pistol bullets.0
