astra 400 ammo question
hello, i have an astra 400 modelo 1921 and i need to know what ammo to shoot out of it. was told it shoots 9mm largo, but on the sight ive seen several with the same markings and the guys selling them claim that they shoot 9mm and 38 supers which doesnt make any since to me seeing that they are different calibers? mine reads on the barrel and slide 9mm & 38? so, could someone tell me what is correct ammo, dont what to blow myself up. thanks

Don't believe the bozo's, about the 9mm luger and super .38 ammo. Just shoot the original Spanish 9mm Largo ammo in it.
It's one of the few military handguns made with a unlocked mechanism. Firing hot 9mm luger and .38 super ammo in the 400 causes violent recoil of the slide, that might be dangerous to the pistol and the person firing it.0 -

Some years back the American Rifleman did an article on the Astra 400
and tested it with about 8-9 calibers including 38Super on one end and .380 on the other. It would be good to research that article.
The Astra 400 was claimed to have chamber dimensions designed to accept a variety of calibers. That didn't hold for the Astra 600.
However, it is a straight blowback, unlocked breech design. That may be fine in a submachine gun having a heavy bolt and recoil spring but a little much in a pistol.
I don't know if the AR retracted any part of that article and maybe they should have.
I'd query the AR and ask them if they still support that article.0
