AR-15 Plus Accessories/Ammo Value?

I'm considering getting into ARs, and I'm just starting to learn but am still very much a novice. A guy I know wants to trade me the following setup for a couple glocks. Could someone please give me a rough estimate of what the following setup is worth, and/or offer any advice regarding whether it's good or bad, or suggest questions I should ask? He says he has around $1,500 in the gun, including the ammo. Thanks much.

Spikes complete lower with M4 stock

DS Arms complete carbine length upper with quad rail and plastic hand guard

Bravo Company bolt carrier group & charging handle

Primary Arms M4 red dot sight.

Primary Arms weapons light

Magpul BUIS

two point sling

Soft side carry case

12 Thermold magazines. 6-30rd. 6-20rd Siamese.

1,380 rounds of ammo.

    Spikes makes a good lower. But the question is, was it put together by spikes or by the fellow selling it? Is this a Frankengun put together by the seller or is it a factory gun sold by Spikes?

    What kind of ammo? This may have significant value or it may not depending on what he is selling.

    What are the Glocks worth you are trading?

    Well lets take this one step at a time. The first 3 items are required of any AR15 so they are a moot point. Seeing that this is now considered used you have about a $650 rifle.
    A Primary Arms Red Dot Sight would be worth about $75.00 Another $50 for the light.
    The Magpul Buis can be had new for about $80
    A 2 point sling and a soft sided case can be had for about $50
    12 Thermold mags can be had new for about $60
    I'm seeing no more then a $1000 rifle without the ammo and not knowing what type of ammo it is its still not worth $500.

    Back to what Maalox said if the gun was built by Spikes I doubt that it would have a DS Arms upper and a Bravo Co. BCG so consider it a franken gun.

    About this time last year I sold a Bushmaster M4 (built by Bushmaster) with a Surefire rail, Surefire light & laser. Magpul pistol grip, Magpul BUIS, and a Burris 3x Prism sight. Just a way better gun with better accessories for $1375.

    Its close but not close enough and again are these the accessories that you really want ??If it was me I'd say no as I'd be changing the red dot for sure. But that's a decision only you can make.

    For two Glocks, I would say that is a deal.

    FWIW, Kelly Neal is a big time user of their stuff. If it's quality enough to place consistently in top competitions then I'd say it's pretty good stuff. Right now the price of both is way down. But, still I'd say for what you listed you would be getting the better end of the deal.

    Buying someone else's Mixed Parts Mongrel doesn't seem to me like the best way to get into AR-clones.

    I'd start by reading about AR's. "The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide" by Walt Kuleck is a good, inexpensive book that will tell you the basics. Then, you need to decide what configuration best meets your needs? Rapid entry? Service rifle? Varmint? Target? You didn't tell us what you are looking for.

    You can probably get exactly what you want straight out of the factory box. At least, you will have a manufacturer's lifetime warranty; buy someone's mongrel, & you have to pay to fix any problem.

    I don't see $1500 there. $700 in the rifle and maybe $500 in the ammo depending on what it is.

    Ask to try it first. If you can't try it, and check to see if it runs ok, and is accurate, then no deal. If anything on the gun was made by Blackthorne, Vulcan, or Hesse, then NO DEAL PERIOD. If it runs ok, then you have a decent deal.

    Just because an AR-15 isn't all Rock River or Colt doesn't mean it's not a good rifle. I have a 'Frankengun' made from various makers in 6.5 Grendel that is currently shooting .6 moa @ 300.

    If they've got the parts from quality makers, which most of them are, they can mix and match all they want. If they run good or are as accurate as you need, then there is no point worrying the fact they are not made by "the best manufacturer" out there. I can name a LOT of good manufacturers of AR uppers and lowers and many parts in between.
