RPM Question
On Red Jerkit Firearms one night they had converted a M1919 into a shoulder-fire (Uh,..A guy told me...I don't watch it! Really!). The owner commented that it didn't cycle fast enough. So, Will said, "We'll just shave a little weight off the bolt". I thought that sounded almost too easy. But it sure sounded practical when you consider bolt vs. return spring. Whadda' ya think?

That or increase the spring tension and open the gas port (verly slightly). One could also reduce the length of the gas path/operation system.

Weight of the bolt vs. return spring will affect the speed at which a bolt cycles. However, since I go to thinking about this more, Perry Shooter is right in that, why would you do something hard and expensive like cutting down a bolt when a spring costs 1/100th of that and it's easier to simply change out. My comment on the gas path/operating system is based on what I know about the M60 and M16. A shorter path means faster cycling. Again though, that is a lot of work to change out components vs. changing a spring.0 -
I had [the use of-was assigned as my point defense weapon inside the compound] an M1919 with the bipod/steel shoulder stock. Dammm resonation from the stock made my right ear deaf! It was not fun to shoot!
Rate of fire was slow..and I've been told the rate of fire is controlled by some sort of regulator assembly that's at the barrel..guessing here, but it retarded the barrel/carrier's rearward motion during firing. I do know that there were different regulators made to control the fire. Aviation application, etc. All you had to do was to swap one out for the other.
That bull about lightning the bolt in a machine shop is totally bunk.
And, they were recoil operated. Best, Joe

Since it a recoil operated weapon the weight of the bolt has minimal impact on rate of fire. The .30 Cal M2 Aircraft Machine gun used a barrel which was about one half the weight of the barrel on the 1919A4 ground MG and this, along with the use of a disintegrating belt (less drag on the feed system) and a change to the buffer (as well as some other tweaks) boosted it's rate of fire to around 1000 RPM instead of the 600 RPM of the ground gun. 0 -
ANY time you are trying to get a full auto or semi auto to function. Modify the cheapest easy to find part first [^]. Like spring ETC. Don't go cutting on a bolt.that will be costly to replace. 0
