    That kind of fakery has been going on for years. It's especially prevalent with kraut guns and militaria.

    And then there was the guy with the star gauge stamp he would cheerfully apply to your Springfield muzzle. And the sell you an official looking data card you could fill out with the serial number and plausible measurements.

    The ones I saw were for the crossed cannons type.

    Counterfeit US ordnance stamps have been around for at least thirty years, although back then they were pretty poorly done and easy to spot. With the increased interest (and big jumps in value) of US military firearms like the M1 Garand, the fakes began getting much better and are now harder to spot.
