Worn Out Checkering

I have a rifle and after 40 years of use, the checkering is pretty much worn away.

Is there any way to re-cut the checkering or do I have to live with it?

  Yes, it can be done. Either by a professional (recommended method) or by you getting a kit and chasing out the lines yourself.

  If it is a collectable all original firearm I would hesitate to recut the checkering. I have a winchester 1894 that I sent to a gentleman to have the wood cleaned and he kindly recut the checkering for me, he thought he was doing me a favor. It is a pistol grip take down 32-40 with 70% original blueing. I can hardly stand to look at it now that I know the wood was recut. Made the gun look pretty and he did an outstanding job.

  Thanks but I believe my checkering is way too far gone. It's worn smooth. The gun is about a 1971 belgium BLR.

  Unless you have the skill requiring tons of practice and patience to do excellent quality checkering, I'd suggest having a good professional tackle the job. This is a process often accomplished by the folks who have learned the skills and have the patience to not screw up the wood. There are literally hundreds of talented folks who just do checkering and the prices can be very reasonable if you have some flexibility with your timing.

  I agree with nononsense.. If it needs more than a simple clean-up, get someone with experience.. There are really no shortcuts..
