Moving how to move gun

My daughter is moving from Minn. To Seattle. The movers wont take handguns or ammo? Can I mail the handguns without the cylinder and then the cylinders separately? Any better way? Guess Ill wait with the ammo until sometime when I drive out there.

    Can't mail handguns through the USPS. You either have to send them by FedEx/UPS or have a licensed Federal Firearms Dealer ship them.

    Is she driving or flying? Driving is easy. Just get a lockable case and drive. As for flying, better lockable "air line" approved case.

    I suppose she could have it shipped to her area FFL by her current local FFL. It'll be cheaper than buying an "air line" approved case.

    Laws on handguns vary from state to state. The best way to do it is to have a FFL dealer, where she is moving from, ship them to a dealer to where she is moving to. That way it avoids all legal aspects that could arise.

    This method above prevents any hazzards with the mover's, and their insurance, and avoids you becomming bubba's sweetheart, should it be a violation of the law where you are moving to. Lots of other's say risk it, and pack them away, take a chance? Is it really worth it?

    Federal law says that you can ship a firearm to yourself at another location. You can make yourself the addressee, or ship it to yourself in care of someone else at another location, but only you can open the package & possess the contents.

    But, as TSR says, if you don't know the state/local law in the new location, you put yourself at risk of violating the law. Some localities do not permit you to "import" certain guns.

    Depending on the value, sell the ammo and buy new when you get there.
    Depending on how many guns she wants transported. Place in a locked safe tucked onto clothes, send on truck, open upon arrival.

    personally i wouldn't involve an FFL to FFL, the paperwork (4473) at the receiving end for each gun will have to be filled out and a fee will be charged for each firearm transferred.

    i would find a crate, box etc., pack the guns in it with lots of bubble wrap, styrofoam "peanuts" and label it "lamp posts", or no label at all, some movers will not move "owner packed" boxes, most others will, when i moved from Commiefornia to Commierado, it was Mayflower, they labeled all my self boxed items, "Owner Packed", which were NOT covered by their insurance.

    it's worth a try.

    If she absolutely does not want to transport them herself in the trunk or in a little trailer, then her cheapest option is USPS. She can mail the long guns herself to herself. An FFL will have to mail the handguns. If she sends the guns by common carrier to herself, without an FFL (it's legal), she WILL have to declare the contents since shipping to a non-FFL is one of the mandatory disclosure categories, and will get stuck with the expensive AIR rates. So, for handguns, it's a toss up between expensive common carrier shipping to herself, but saving the FFL fees. Or having an FFL mail them for her with USPS at a cheap rate, but having the paperwork and FFL&NICS expenses. In the end, the cheapest way is to just put them in the trunk of the car and legally haul them herself, if she is willing. Good luck. [:)]

    I can guarantee that I would not involve an FFL unless lawfully mandated. With transactions ranging from $30 - $50 in the Tampa area the cost (depending on the quantity of firearms) could be a lot of money thrown away.

    I think your/her best bet is to find out what she can lawfully do in her state-to-state travels and transport herself if she feels comfortable doing so. If not, her dad should help her (if possible)[^]

    The moving company is licensed as a common carrier. If you are not a FFL, it is a violation of Federal law to deposit a firearm with a common carrier and NOT advise them of that. And yes, the Feds HAVE prosecuted people for that.
