Maynard cracked frame infront of breech
Got a question on the reparability of a Maynard with a verticlly cracked frame in front of the breech face.
I've been told it can be repaired and shot again with Black Powder loads as it was designed for. I know it would hold up OK with 22 RFs and 25-20 SS loads. The big question is about the 40-70-280 grain loads and 64 caliber shotgun loads.
He gaurantees it to hold up and is a master gunsmith, whos work I've seen and is unbeliveable in what he has recovered from what I would call name brand scrap.

Lot of those 19th Century BP guns were made out of wrought iron rather then steel. I broke a hammer on a Danish Rolling Block by hitting it with a plastic hammer.
If the frame on your Maynard is wrought iron I wouldn't push your luck with any kind of loads, BP or smokeless..
There was a article years ago in one of the Gun Digest annuals regarding the wrought iron RB's self destructing. It really opened my eyes because I owned a bunch of them in the past and shot a bunch of hot smokeless and BP loads in them.0 -
