controlled round claw feed
I was wondering in regards to a control round claw feed system on a centerfire rifle is it necessary to operate the bolt handle a certain way. By that I mean do they operate as a whole more reliably as far as loading if you operate the bolt handle faster vs slower. I noticed with my rifle that sometimes it fails to allow the round to slide up under the claw completely if you move the bolt handle slow vs moving it along a little more briskly. Should the speed at which you operate the bolt handle matter or is there something wrong with the rifle. I cleaned or polished up everything I could see on the bolt where the cartridge meets it as its coming up to try and help the cartridge glide in easier. This is the only control round claw feed (mauser style) rifle I own so I have nothing else to compare it with.

You might disassemble the bolt to remove the extractor, "claw". Put a high polish and chamfer on it's lower surface that touches the cannelure of the cartridge. This might help the feeding of the cartridge if the bolt is cycled very slowly. 0 -
Considering the control feed was originally in the 1898 Mauser that was built for military use, one could think that the intention of the designer and manufacturer was that the action was to be used in a "brisk" manner in combat. Meaning that the soldier using the rifle would be interested in loading and firing the rifle in a very rapid manner without concern of whether the cartridges were feeding properly. With that in mind, it seems that the Mauser action was intended to be able to "take a beating and keep on ticking" and not be treated as a delicate tool that needs to be gently handled. 0 -

I think I get what you are say'n (item in blue, above). During slow, deliberate feed, the round seems to 'hang up' during the charge cycle, but it eventually trues to the chamber with continued forward movement of the bolt, correct?
I'll bet you notice a slight 'hesitation pressure' when the bolt is pushed forward slowly, correct? But the round will, after continued forward pressure, 'snap-to-true' in perfect alignment with the chamber, correct?
If yes, don't touch the gun. It's doing its job correctly. Joe0 -
If you're moving the bolt faster, there is some additional momentum which overcomes the drag of the cartridge rim sliding up under the extractor and aligning with the chamber. The ejection cycle is also meant to be "brisk" to properly throw the case out of the action. Most recreational shooters aren't as "motivated" as a soldier in battle might be and don't put the force behind operating the bolt. Being a reloader, I'm always trying to catch the brass and many times end up with the fired case still sitting in the ejection port rather than flung out as it should be. 0 -
When operating the bolt slowly the round might not go all the way under the claw which in turn allows the round to go into the chamber ahead of the claw. I can then either turn the barrel up and dump the round back out or let the claw ride over the case and close the bolt (I don't prefer to do this). When operated faster this doesn' seem to be and issue unless the cartridge wasn't loaded into the magazine wrong. As to operating the bolt slow, my son might do this when hunting sometimes prefering to load the gun only when he seems something. By operating it slower its seems more quiet opposed to manipulating the bolt faster. 0
