What packs a bigger punch? Just a thought that came into my head this afternoon.

The 12 gauge. Even though you might get the same weight shot charge, the larger bore will deliver better patterns. The 12 gauge 2 3/4" magnum load of 1 1/2 ounces of shot is considerably heavier than the heaviest 20 gauge load I've seen. 0 -
What do you mean by "punch"? The same weight charge at the same velocity gives the same effective energy at short distance (up to 30 yards). The 12 gauge tends to give more even, denser patterns at longer ranges and a shorter shot string. As Mobuck says, a bigger payload is available in the 12 gauge. 0 -

No brainer.
12 gauge can potentially take a bigger payload, and of the two, its the more powerful and effective round.
Try a standard 12 gauge slug vs a 20. . .0 -
Depends on the loading. 12 Ga you can get bigger payloads and maybe maintain velocity with the bigger payload with factory loads this isn't always the case.
If you shoot steel shot you may perscribe to the bigger payload camp. In which case 12ga is far better than a 20 ga with shot 2 and larger. But that has more to do with payload then punch.
I am also not sure a deer gives a hoot if it is shot with a 300 grain sabot traveling at 2000 mfps or a 260 grain at the same muzzle velocity.0
