RPK to AKM Conversion?
How difficult or not would it be to convert an RPK to an AKM given the RPK has a heavy receiver and barrel as opposed to the AKM?
Wouldn't it more or less comprise of cutting the barrel to AKM length, replacing the gas tube with an AKM gas tube with a bayonet lug and attaching the muzzle slant brake and front site assembly with a cleaning rod stop, or is it a little more in depth?
Regards

It's a bit more than that.
A true RPK has a braided recoil spring, the hollow tube/solid rod type recoil set up, and takes larger lower handguards.
Curious what's wrong with the current set up.0 -
Nothing wrong, just want the RPK heavy receiver and barrel in an AKM but with the other AKM attributes as well including the chrome lined bore and scope rail.
Prefer the heavier built RPK as opposed to the AKM and came up with this possible project of converting the RPK to an AKM...
Nice cartoon btw, thats them for sure, lol...0 -
There's really no point to what you want to do, except to haul around more weight which could be carried in the form of water, med kit, or shelter/cold weather gear.
The standard Romy 1mm stamped AK with a 16" standard weight bbl will shoot the same as an HB RPK, even shortened, and you'll have 2 fewer pounds of steel to hump around.0 -
Yeah, I am familiar with that argument too and the weight doesn't bother me though as I am a large framed person and have carried the M60E3 and M240B for years.
But anyway like I said just wanted a heavier receiver and barrel for the AKM is all, liking the RPK setup and thought it would be great as an AKM.
The Yugo M70/M70B1 would be an option if it had a Green Mountain chrome lined AK barrel and scope rail, but I haven't found any like that...

If you're going to carry around a heavy gun, ya might as well get a FAL. The .308 has legs past 300m. 0 -
300 and then some, I plan on getting an FAL and an AR10 as well but that will be after this project.
However the AK is capable of 500 meters and fairly accurately with open sights; although the AR can do it a bit more accurately but that wont make much difference to the target especially if the grouping is good.0
