Imperial German regimental markings can be very confusing. I interpret the markings to mean that the rifle was the 185 rifle, issued to the 8th Substitute Battery, of the 2nd Field Artillery Regiment.

If it was made in 1883 chances are it was used for only a very short time if at all by the regular German army. The 71/84 magazine fed repeating rifle was put into service in 1884. The 8mm Model 1888 Commission Rifle made black power rifles obsolete in the German Army. Because of this chances are it was either sold on the military surplus market or perhaps used by colonial troops/native police in the German colonies.
