Scope Mounting Problem?

I'm using Wheeler scope ring alignment bars and the points are off by about 1/16th of an inch up and down.

The rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard and the bases and rings are Leupold dual dovetail.

Is this a problem? If so, any recommendations on how to fix it?

    Bases can be shimmed to match the heigth.
    Before you shim anything though make certain the alignment rods are parralel.

    Brownells carries base shims. I would have to check their website to be certain If they carry tapered shims.

    Couldn't find tapered shims. Wouldn't recomend them anyway.
    If you're not dead set on the double dovetail set-up you could use the Leupold standard rotary dovetail bases and Burris Signature rings.

    try switching the rings first. then shim as needed followed by lapping.

    The bases came with 6 screws...some long and some short...when do you use the long screws and when do you use the short?

    From Leupold:

    Notes:
    "Hole spacing is the same as the Remington 700 but the front base is .020 inch lower."

    This is a generic design which works for several actions. These bases are made to fit several actions interchangeably. This way Leupold doesn't have to package several different versions, saving inventory and confusion with ordering.

    They include the different screw length to accommodate the various action sizes. Check your front and rear action ring for the proper length of screw to use with the bases. Do NOT use longer screws unless necessary because they can cause interference with the bolt function.

    OK, I have disassembled, reassembled, and turned rings around, but the rear ring is always a touch higher than the front...is this the .020 that Leupold talks about?

    If the difference is this small, do I need to shim, lap or just mount the scope?

    I'd go ahead and shim , now that you have the discrepency down to .020" . Don't lap them till you get them lined up . Your post first said you were off 1/16" which is huge , shimming isn't an option on that kind of gap . A one piece base would solve your problem too .

    you are on the home stretch, shim and you should be good to go.
    plus, i myself am impressed that you had enough sense to use alignment rods. you would not beleive the self mounting jobs i have seen come into my shop. good luck to you and HAPPY THANKSGIVING my friend

    I learned that the Leupold website states incorrectly that the Weatherby Vanguard should use Weatherby Mark V bases, when they should use bases for a Remington 700.

    I put the Remington 700 bases on and the alignment is perfect!
