I have the chance to buy a S&W mod 51 in very good condition for a really good price. I understand that it's chambered in 22WMR. My question is can you shoot 22lr. in a 22WMR cylinder?

  No, the chamber is larger due to a slightly larger case diameter.

  Can you do it? Yes.
  
  Can you do it SAFELY? No.
  
  Oversized .22 magnum chamber will cause .22LR case to split on firing, leaking hot gas and burning powder around the broken case into the guns action and maybe also into your hands and face.
  
  If you must fire .22LR then it might be possible to obtain (or create) a .22LR conversion cylinder.
