10 mm

I'm thinking about asking for a 10 mm auto from my wife for Christmas. I've got alot of experience with 45 ACP's and 38 super's.
I plan to punch paper with it along with short range white tail hunting. Any suggestions? new or used is fine.

    A number of different manufacturers make them. I've had a Glock Model 20 for years. Function and accuracy are excellent. Factory loadings are definitely on the hot side, no problem bring down a white tail long as you hit it in the right place.

    For general plinking and paper punching I load 180/200 grain TMJ bullets to around 800 FPS. Or use my Advantage Arms .22 conversion unit. The Glock isn't a particularly heavy pistol, plinking with the hotter loads isn't a lot of fun.

    I'm not sure if "10 mm auto" refers to the round or type of gun you prefer, but I'll use the ambiguity to slip in the Smith 610 revolver as a suggestion. I have an older 6" lugged barrel version, it's accurate and easy to shoot. Great trigger, never jams, moon clips make for fast reloads and you can plink away with 40 S & W for practice. I think the 6" revolver and Smith sights make for an excellent short range deer gun too.

    Glock would be the cheapest. Used S&W would cost as much as they did in 1990's. Colt would be the ouchie price (clutching the heart or wallet).

    For hunting S&W 610-2 would be my first choice with the 6.5" barrel. Glock with the 6" barrel would also do the trick. A couple of years back Springfield came out with a cammo-ed and comped 1911 long slide number (looked good from what I read). Single shot T/C might be another option.

    I guess it boils down to how deep or in your case how much your mrs. loves you. Then again like in most marriages what the wife buys is basically your money.

    S&W 610-2 with a after market scope mount and scope it or the Glock. With the Glock you can swap the barrel and then pack it with the 5" barrel as a CCW.

    I just got a Glock 20C and due to the lack of ammunition around here, I have spent most of my time playing with it in the other calibers for which I have barrels and can get ammunition easily. Right now it is the 40S&W and 357Sig. I'm looking at the 9X25Dillon as a possiblity soon. That's one advantage of the Glock.

    I would say find one to test fire before getting one.

    The gun is light, lighter than my HiPower by quite a bit and if you are looking to get a Glock, this may be a consideration. I notice that in 40S&W it kicks more than my USP40.

    If you are looking for a 1911 style, Fusion is the name to go to. If they are to pricey, then a Colt or S&W.

    The S&W 3rd generation DA/SA 1006 is a real winner too, as is their 610 revolver, which you can shoot 40 S&W in too.

    Lastly if you are looking for well built DA/SA with some options, the all steel framed EAA Witness series is the way to go. I have the Glocks...both the 20, and 29. They don't leave many options.

    I've always really liked the 10 and I load them to max velocities. For new I'd buy an EAA Witness Long Slide or Fusion Long Slide. I have an AMT Javelina in 10mm that's been tuned and had the slide lightened so it runs perfect.
    The Glock 20 is the only Glock I would ever own and put in the light trigger.
