Old Unertl ?
Hi, I was reading on the Unertl target. They mentioned as an option was a Lee dot reticle. What did it look like and what was the purpose. I just assumed bullet drop?
Thanks

IN days past scopes only had Cross Hairs . This was BEFORE all the different reticle styles we have today. . This was because they actually used Wire or sometimes spider web filament for these cross HAIRS. Now we have etched recticles The Lee DOT came about for target scopes it was a small glob of some type of matter stuck to the place two very thin filaments crossed. Lee perfected this because others had tried before him but recoil would break these fine filaments . The fact that the Unertl scope would slide in the mounts would cut down on the recoil within the scope. 0 -
Just to add to what Perry shooter said the dot visually made it easier to acquire the target. I like them over the conventional and duplex reticles when I'm shooting at targets or varmints. It's got nothing to do with bullet drop 0 -
Lots of target shooters like dot reticles because of the way a small dot centers on the target. A few hunters still like dot reticles because of the way a large dot shows up in poor light or wooded background. You can still get a genuine Lee Tackhole Dot installed on suitable scopes.

You can have multiple dots spaced for rangefinding or holdover.
There was an old article on how to select a dot size relative to your caliber's trajectory so that it would cover the point of impact at all usual ranges. No figuring, just put the dot on the critter and shoot.0 -
I have several scopes with dots in them. My "newest" one is an older Leupold VXIII 2.5-8. I like the way the dot seems bigger (relative to the image) at low power and smaller at highest power. As has been said, the rifle can be sighted so the bullets "hit" the top of the dot at 100 yds. and then they will still hit the dot at longer ranges. As Hawk said, "just put the dot on the critter and shoot." 0
