Winchester 94AE Trapper 44 mag
My local dealer just took in a Winchester 94AE Trapper, 1894-1994 marked receiver, 44 mag. My question is, the magazine tube protrudes about an inch past the end of the barrel. I looked at a few of the same rifles on the auction side and on all of them, the barrel is slightly longer than the mag tube. Also, the one for sale locally has the large loop lever, can that be swapped out easily for the standard loop?
I'm wondering if someone cut the barrel down slightly for some reason or another. I will try and get some photos of it tomorrow.

Something is definitely wrong. Shouldn't be this way. The only thing I can think of is either the barrel has been cut back for some reason, or the mag tube/barrel aren't original. Being it has one of those oversized levers it's possible bubba had his hands on it sometime in the past, and was in the process of converting it into one of those sawed off Steve Macqueen specials. Which would piss off the feds big time because you can't convert a rifle into a handgun legally.0 -
The blue book says its a 100 year model made and marked that way in 1994. Could be a parts gun. Perhaps the bbl was set back to cure headspace or the muzzle was cut back because of crown damage. Maybe the tube was swaped put due to damage and they didn't have the correct one. See if the barrel is an even length 16,18 or 20 inches. I like the big levers but mine has the regular one. Easy to change. 0 -
Make sure you measure that barrel. You don't want one under 16 inches, for sure. Measure from the closed bolt face to the end of the crown. Would love to see pictures.

I have one w/o the big loop and the barrel is not shorter than the mag tube. 0 -
Barrels are alot tougher than mag tubes and less likely to get serious replacement damaged, my guess is the tube was damaged and replaced. 0 -

a friend of mine gave me one of those rifles in a bag and asked me to put it back together, i told him there were so many missing parts it would cost more to restore it than what i's worth, if you need some parts let me know and i'll ask him if he wants to sell it off as parts. it does have a standard lever.0 -
I have that anniversary model with the big loop and the barrel on mine is not shorter than the magazine tube--sounds like some messed something up. 0 -
Sold one for a friend about 6 months ago. The mag tube was Not longer than the barrel. Something isn't right. 0 -
You might check and make sure the magazine tube hasn't slipped forward and not seated properly in the receiver. 0 -

You got it! I stopped back in the store today and took a closer look at it and you are correct, the mag tube did slip forward. I like the rifle and if I can get the dealer to come down a little on price, I will bring it home. If I do buy it, I will swap out the large loop lever for the standard loop.0
