    There is a device called a Helicoil. It's a tapped hollow screw about one size larger than the existing hole. A destroyed tapped screw hole can be drilled out and tapped to the next larger size and a helicoil inserted which returns the original tapped hole to its original dimensions. Sights in various sizes can be obtained from Brownells.

    could someone tell me how to determine what heigth rear sight i will need for a .290 front sight. also i wasn't aware the made heli coils that small but i will see what i can find.

    The factory height ft is .290 and the rear is one of those slotted step adj ones looking at Numrich. Maybe you can find a good picture of a complete rifle and scale the rear off the front. If it were mine I would drill/tap to a larger size then take a nail and die to the new size at 95% thread engaugement, install and pean. Lastly redrill and tap to correct origional size. Touch up with cold blue. If nothing else get the middle folder and try. A spare rear sight laying is that expensive.
