Shipping guns USPS.
A range report here for shipping guns via USPS. Let me say with one exception, this last one, I would do it any day over UPS. The rifle I shipped previously got about 900 miles in 2 days. At about 3-4 times the cost, I can get a rifle via UPS or Fedex there in that same time. I've done this a number of times.
Now, for this last one. For some reason, my priority mailed rifle didn't get to the Winchester Service Center in 2-3 days like it should have. Compound that with a holiday on Friday. It's now 7 Days (normal time for UPS to deliver at regular cost). However, I had tracking all the way and could see where it had been scanned. Then there was a glitch on the address. Not sure if something was ringing up wrong but the rifle spent two days in St. Louis when it should have just continued on.
Anyhow, the best part. I used the number 800-275-8777 and pushed 0 after I got the menu list of issues to handle. The person there went over the places it got sorted/checked through. I then told her about the address glitch. She gave me the Arnold Mo PO phone # and I talked to them. They told me something screwy in the update. As per the website, the rifle was not sent out for delivery on Saturday. It was received there on Saturday. They knew the address as Browning or Winchester Service Center and had the box ready to go for this morning.
I had to say, I wasn't happy with the foot shuffle in St. Louis taking two days to get my box out, but everybody else was very helpful and got my box down the road to the right place.
I do understand about not being able to ship sporting amounts of ammunition and pistols (to an FFL) being a frustration. These are rules that were put in place during another administration though. Maybe after the NRA helps us get national CC we can focus on letting the mail be our 'everything' carrier again.

Thanks for the report; procedures are constantly changing, & this is the only viable forum for us to get the latest information.
Yes, it seems that UPS & Fedex rates have increased faster than those of USPS, but you have to do the calculation for every package. Insurance rates for USPS are double the others, but they don't have a "rural" surcharge. USPS Priority Mail delivery times are just "suggestions", not guaranteed.
Ammunition rules have changed since nononsense posted his last update. DOT no longer offers an online certification course, but they don't require it for < 66 lbs by noncommercial shippers; they only require packing per regs, plus the ORM=D sticker.
Fedex does not require certification for noncommercial shippers, but the ONLY way that they will accept ammunition is by scheduled pickup. Hubs & Fedex Office will not accept it; strange, as they both accept handguns.

I have shipped USPS for about 3 years now and am very happy.
My FFL ships all of his handguns Priority Mail and we're both happy.

Neal, I always compare shipping rates for both UPS and USPS with insurance and for the most part the rates are about the same, although the USPS parcel post rates are a bit cheaper 0 -
From what I understand, you're lucky the guns left St. Louis at all. I shipped a Buck knife (insured) to my brother in the STL area. Package arrived empty. When I contacted the Post office, all I had to do was mention St. Louis and they paid immediately. Apparently mail theft is a huge problem there. 0 -

Ruh, Roh Rorge...better call Winchester in the morning and see what is happening....as I haven't heard back from them yet.
