.45 Colt Horniday Critical Defense on deer

255 grain FTX bullet, 950 FPS. I would think this ammo in a Ruger Single Six would be more than adequate for Whitail at handgun ranges. 50 yards or less. Anybody had experience with it? Will be using it for my back up with my .54 Hawken frontloader or possibly primary for the right shot.

  The Critical Defense line is for humans and is a 185 grain load although you probably could use it on deer--it has a little less energy than the Leverevolution load--By the 225 grain you list I'm assuming you are going with the Leverevolution .45 Colt load for deer and not Critical Defense that your topic title said. I have used the 225 grain load in my Vaquero and it was a decent round and at the range you are looking it it will be just fine on deer. I can also recommend Buffalo Bore's Standard Pressure .45 Colt load. It's a cast 255 grain gas checked bullet that has more than enough punch-they do make +p .45 Colt loads too that your Ruger can handle. BTW is that a typo when you say Ruger Single Six cuz I never have seen a Single Six in .45 Colt[:D] That would be one crazy conversion lol j/k.

  I haven't used the Hornady critical defense load I've been using a load from Georiga arms 260gr speer hollow point at 1200 fps that works great out of my Ruger Blackhawk

  No typo, brain fade! Ruger BlackHawk. Ammo is 225 grain, not 255. Front of box says Critical Defense, end flap says Lever Evolution. Sounds like what you have. Have used some cast bullets full of pyrodex. They were running around 900 FPS. Never shot a deer with it. Will see how my Ruger likes them maybe tomorrow.
