Yep, just not the other way around. Colt .45 is longer than Schofield.

Just think of it as 38Special & 357 Magnum only the leanth of the case is different. The 45 Government was issue just another name for the Schofield so troopers could be trained to use 45 Government in their pistols. Please come back here and put auction item number when you list them.

Some say there are THREE rounds here, not two.
    .45 Colt
    .45 S&W Schofield
.45 Government - length as Schofield but with narrower rims to avoid interference in Colt SAA, still larger than .45 Colt for better simultaneous extraction.

Note that a Ruger .45 Colt will not accept .45 Schofield, the rims are so large as to hit the ratchet. It is a gunsmith job to clear the ratchet for the larger rims.

I think you're right on there, Hawk. I believe the .45 Government was loaded by Frankford Arsenal, at the time when the Government had both Schofields and SAA's in the field. It may be the reason that the term .45 'Long Colt' was originally employed, to help distinguish between the cartridges.

Did you have an attorney prepare the auction description for you?[;)]

Both Cartridges, Compared. I Believe The Top Cartridge Has Also Been Referred To As .45 Gov't, Because If there Were Dimensional Changes, There Would Be A Separate Listing
