Winchester 1873 First Model Dust Cover

I'm just about to purchase my first WInchester 1873 and have a question that maybe someone here can answer. I'd like to get an all original First Model that matches the same year of one of my Colt SAA's and found one on gunbroker.com. While doing some research, one of the references stated that very few of the first models have their original dust covers. Is there any way to tell from pictures if it actually is the original or an after market copy? I would really appreciate any guidance. I did speak to the owner regarding if it is original, but had someone I showed the pictures to suggest it might not be?? Would a non-original reduce the rifle's value significantly?

    I need to be able to see pictures of the mortise cover. Post a link to the auction and I should be able to answer your question about its originality.

    Yes, a non-factory original mortise cover will reduce the value.

    Dust cover looks right to me, but I guess you really can't tell from the one photo. As to caliber, all 73's of this vintage were .44-40 and unmarked. I don't think they were marked until the introduction of the .38-40.

    In answer to your questions, the rifle looks very good and original to me. The mortise cover appears to be correct.
