how to remove cylinder on 'Smith J frame
I need to lube the shaft on this gun,and when holding the gun upright,do I want to turn clockwise,or oounter-clockwise?

Just open the cylinder and drop some oil around the shaft and turn it. The oil will work it's way down. There is NO need to remove the cyl. If you grab the ejector rod with pliers you leave teeth marks on it. 0 -
Counter clockwise as it's a left hand thread. It is staked and you will break the staking. Therefore, I wouldn't do it unless it's bent and needs replacing.
You can oil it by letting oil run into the front and by depressing the extractor and oiling the shaft under the extractor star.
Cycle it a bunch of times and wipe off excess oil.0 -
I'm confused. Do you want to remove the cylinder from the frame, or the ejector rod from the cylinder? 0 -
To remove the cylinder, carefully unscrew the retaining screw on the right side of the frame above the triggerguard. Make sure you use a well-fitting screwdriver so you don't damage the screw.
Open the cylinder and the crane (with ejector rod and cylinder) should slide right off. Then just slide the ejector rod and cylinder off the crane.
At that point you can clean off the crane and soak the ejector rod/cylinder in solvent to clean it.

As mentioned, though, taking the ejector rod off the cylinder is more complicated, and should not be necessary for normal maintenance. Usually the only time you'll need to do that is if the ejector rod is bent.0 -
Front screw on right of frame takes out crane and cylinder as above stated. Cyl. and rod will slide out of crane. Spray with Gun Scrubber real good then a little oil. No need to mess with the ejector rod. 0 -
