Marlin, older Model Number, etc?
Howdy,
Researching for a friend a few firearms, came across a Marlin lever rifle that's been in the family ages. And admit I know next to zip on old Marlins, with Flaydermans and Stand Catalog just confusing me more. Sorry, pics are not available.
Here is what I have in hope to gather more information and/or steer in right direction...
Serial number on bottom of reciever is D6692.
Model and caliber I could not find marked on the rifle. That's the big head scratcher??
It has an octogon barrel with full length magazine tube, and straight stock. With what looks like a factory tang sight, (no name/marking visible on it). The slot on the barrel for the buckhorn sight is clean, bluing matches it's surroundings, no tampering indicated and seems to have been left naked since day one.
On the receiver is "Marlin Safety"
Barrel is "Marlin Smokeless Special"
and
"Marlin Firearms Co New-Haven, Ct. USA Patented Oct 11, 1887, April 2, 1889, August 1 1893"
Now, stored with this rifle, the only center fire in the batch, are two boxes of 30-30. So, I slipped the bullet end of one into the barrel-- proper fit. Took it outside and fed, chambered, and ejected a few of the 30-30's, all went slick as silk. Being on a ranch, could have pulled the trigger, but sanity prevailed until absolutely sure of caliber.
Lastly a long shot without photos, I full realize, yet value-- ballpark, anyone? And if get proper I.D.'d of course I'll go to the Auction side to compare....
It was a working rifle on this ranch so some light scatches and very minor dents on the stock are present, with original finish through out.
Metal inside and out sports zero pitting, with obvious wear and thinning on blueing around where normally handled, with still good if not better, (still some good shine), bluing throughout the rest. Rifling is fine, chamber the same. Screw heads are straight.
That's about all I have to go on.

I'll Google around the Brophy clue, though doubt will get the book in hand to nose through in time, as friend needs to liquidate soon.
I, too, came up blank with the Oldguns site with the 1906 cutoff and 1948 cut-in dates. So deductively puts it somewheres in between.
Have since found out with the "D" on serial number was 1917 to 1921 or 1922. Yet, if "D" is last of series and change-over to Model-1936 wasn't until, surprise, 1936, that's still a sizable gap. Will investigate more today. Though, I think it was Oldguns that stated records may be non-existant?
At least have found out it is a Model-1893, with it marked so hidden under the tang sight, 99.99% sure. Tang sight is most likely a Marbles from factory, also.
Still baffled about the caliber, as been said where to find it on the barrel, as usually the case-- I went over the gun pretty good, I think?
Marlin Collectors has been helpful, and waiting hopefully to hear more here on Gunbroke.

sounds like it is 30-30 most common,it came also as 32 win special, 32-40 or 38-55 or 25-36 marlin 0 -

Newer question is: seems the takedown model came with the shorter mag-tube and round barrel, correct? Rather than the full length under an octogon?0
