    I believe that notch you see was put there by the factory.
    Rounded on the sides and tapers from top to bottom. Assists in pushing the firing pin back whed gun is broke open and cocked.

    The firing pin shouldn't be protruding from the breech face when the opening lever is activated. If it as you say sticking out and not retracting when a new shell is loaded this is a very dangerous situation, and should taken to a gunsmith.

    1923model12win... The firing pin should be retracted by the top lever when breaking the gun down in the model 220 and you should not see the firing pin past the breech face when the gun is open. The model 220B works different...

    I believe the hammer should be rebounding with the firing pin floating and not protruding beyond the breech face with the hammer leaning on it.
    If it is forward and forcing the firing pin forward, there either should be a half cock position or someone replaced the firing pin
    with one too long.
    These top break firing pin tips do break off.
