S&W barrel thread direction
Need to remove barrel from S&W model 36. Looking from barrel end, is it left to loosen or right to loosen?

It has right hand threads, so turn it to the left. 0 -
If it's was manufactured prior to the early 1980's, there is a retaining pin through the top of barrel and frame. This has to be carefully driven out to remove the barrel. The Model 36's made after this have tightly interference fit barrels. Care must be taken as the barrels are a tight fit in the frame. If the frame isn't secured properly as the barrel is unscrewed, it is possible that it will be damaged by being warped or sprung.
EDIT #1, Remove the cylinder. Make up a wooden block the same size as the cylinder hole in the frame, just a little wider though. Clamp the frame and wooden cylinder insert in a vise with wooden vise jaws. Use a strap wrench that has been dusted with rosin on the barrel to unscrew it from the frame.0 -
After you clamp it in your bench vise, be sure to tighten the jaws on your pipe wrench so the teeth can get a good grip on the barrel. We wouldn't want it to slip would we? [:D] 0 -
Clamp the barrel and turn the frame.
IF you have the tools.
Otherwise you are going to ruin the frame.0 -
Thanks guys, I finally got it off. I had already removed the pin, had it properly supported, however, just couldn't get it to budge. Then thought might be trying to turn wrong direction. Mod 36 was made around 1960 and I guess after 50 years it was set pretty good. After removing the pin I dripped penetrating oil in the pin hole for a couple of days, maybe that helped a bit (along with your good expert advice), Thanks again. 0
