JC Higgins Model 20 Curio & Relic
Can a JC Higgins Model 20 slide action 12 gauge shotgun be shipped to a Curio & Relic holder from an individual? I can not see a serial #. Thanks, Gunswapper.

I just stumbled across this from the Sears Archives----seems that the last JC Higgins Model 20's were built and/or sold in 1962 (think they started making these in 1948. So it may be a gray area there, given that you won't find a serial number on that gun. Not sure how you want to play this out....but I'm also not too sure how it can be proven if your shotgun is/isn't 1960, a '61 or a '62.

There should be an assembly date code on the barrel if manufactured in December 1956 or later. If no assembly date code, it was manufactured before December.
Another method is the Sears identification number on the barrel 583.??
Although not precise, IT can probably prove C&R status of most versions.0 -
According to information obtained from The Hoosier Gun Works, a J.C. Higgins Model 20 is the same as a Hi Standard Model 200. The Blue Book of Gun Values says that the Hi Standard Model 200 was sold as part of a promotional package beginning in 1971. It doesn't make sense that the gun would have no serial number as these were required by the Gun Control Act of 1968. 0 -
There is no end to the truly bad data on the internet. The Model 20 was discontinued for several years before the High Standard model 200 Pump was introduced. The Model 200 Pump was introduced before the 1971 promotional package offered in 1971. You will also find a High Standard model 200 semi-auto 20 Ga sold by J. C. Penny. Model 200 was the Penny model name in this case. 0 -
JohnStimson, There is no date code on the barrel unless it is a capitol "P" which is on the small flat on the underside of the barrel. The left side of the barrel is marked 'J.C. HIGGINS MODEL 20' over 'SEARS,ROEBUCK AND CO.583.54'. Does any of this help? Thanks, Gunswapper. 0 -
Swapper, maybe you could/should do some Googling and see if you can find out when exactly that particular Sears model number shotgun last appeared for sale in their catalog?..... 0 -
The Model 20 began with the 583.53 in 1947 and was designated the HS2 at High Standard. The 583.54 appeared in 1948 as a deluxe version of the 583.53 and was also a HS2.
These two guns were only in production for a littel over a year before being replaced by the 583.55 and .56 which were HS3's.
Your Model 20 is indeed C&R qualified.
The catalog search is a good ides with several pitfalls. 1. The catalogs do not distinguish between the various versions of the model 20 and there were 22 versions. 2. Sears had ten or twelve different catalog centers and at least in teh gun sections they were not all alike. I tried to collect a complete ser of catalogs to research these guns and near teh end, I discovered that there were these different catalog centers with different content even for the same catalog date.
