    Iver Johnson 410 2 1/2" chamber. That was my first shotgun and of course it was a single shot hammer type.
    My question is this, has anyone else shot a 3" shell in a gun like this or am I the only one. I have no clue how I could have even closed the gun up, seems like it should have been difficult. I was only 12 and my dad gave me a box of 3" shells. I complained to him that it really kicked hard. He said well let me shoot it and then he said yes it does and looked at the spent shell casing and it had only opened up to probably .375" if that.
    I to this day don't know why that would make it kick so hard. Any thoughts on that?
    The 410 Iver was really thick at the chamber and I think that possibly even a 12 ga. barrel would interchange. That's the only reason it didn't blow up.

    The extra 1/2 inch of shell would be compressed by the forcing cone at end of the 2-1/2" chamber, generating excess pressure and increased recoil.

    I totally get the high pressure in the chamber but if the chamber doesn't blow up then it kind of seems like the gases would take longer to come out of the barrel thus decreasing the kickback.

    Pressure is rated, usually in some units of force , in relation to some amount of surface...like pounds(force) per square inch(surface area)...or PSI. as the amount of pressure rises, the amount of surface area that it is applying that force to, stays the same(in this case, the surface area that counts, would be the diameter of the head and rim of the shell casing, that is applying that force to the breech face of your gun). Thad force has to go somewhere, so it does...straight back thru the stock, in the form of recoil.

    The shooting of the 3" shell in a 2 1/2" chamber can be very catostrophic, and I advise not doing it. Much the same way for shooting a 45 Colt or 44 Magnum round out of a 410, where the choke in the end of the bore is only about).390", and the bullets are 0.452" for the 45, and 0.4295" for the 44. At some point of time, the laws of physics will not be so nice to you.
