Antique Gunmaker I.D.

Anyone have any info on a "C. Baker" Gun is a precussion long gun, octogon barrel, 50 cal, 37 1/2" barrel. Half stocked with pewter or iron fore-end tim. Brass inletted butt plate, brass trigger guard. Checked Fladerman's and couldn't find him.

  Did you remove the barrel and check underneath for proofmarks? Crossed halberds (battle axes) would indicate English or "ELG" would indicate Belgian.

  C. Baker is not listed in "American Gun Makers" by Carey. Colonial period thru 1900. Not unusual, there were many, many makers of muzzle loading rifles. A back action lock would indicate a later date made, after about 1850.

  There were several "C. Baker" gunmakers. Do you have any idea what part of the country it originally came from?

  According to "American Gunsmiths" by Frank M. Sellers there is a C. Baker Albany, N.Y. Percussion fowler dated 1839 percussion lock marking and a C. E. BakerChagrin Falls, Ohio, 1881-1886.

  Thanks. I can't post photos but I can email them to one of you if anyone would care to post them. The gun came out of New England.
