KRAG CARBINE MODEL 1896

I picked up a Krag Carbine Model 1896 -- Ser # 71112 looks all priginal and in good condition -- I do not collect or trade in many military Firearms so my question is --- Do you think this serial number ( 71112 ) is in in the range of the 1st US Volunteer Cav. Rough Riders to pay $ 35.00 to join the US Martial arms & Springfield Research just to have the number checked -- I would appreciate your thoughts

  I don't believe Roosevelt's Krags were issued in any particular block of serial numbers. As there are less than two hundred of them still known to exist, I think it would be worth the $35 to find out if Springfield Research can identify your carbine.
  
  Alternatively, there is apparently a listing of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry 1896 carbines in Franklin Mallory's book "The Krag Rifle Story" on pages 253-272. Perhaps you can find someone with a copy or get one at your local library through their inter-library loan system.
  
  Note that not every carbine was documented so, if it isn't listed, its usage by Roosevelt's troopers would be pure speculation.
