17 Hornet

I been using a 17hmr for some years now to stroke a few bunny's out with great success. How does the 17 hornet fair up ??

    Are there any 17 Hornet rifles out there actually for sale? I see models posted on the Savage website. I see ammo for sale. I hear Ruger will offer it, but I see no guns for sale anywhere.

    There should a couple of new ones released shortly and I'm sure that will probably happen at SHOTShow. I know several makers have platforms suited to the Hornet cartridge so it will be a balancing act of pressure and bolts once again. The safety testing will take up time while we all sit around tapping our respective feet, waiting impatiently for the results to be released.

    The one that I am personally aware of is the Savage M25:

    "Savage Will Offer Model 25s Chambered in 17 Hornet

    Savage has confirmed that, for 2012, it will add a 17 Hornet chambering to its line-up of Model 25 varmint rifles. Savage's decision to produce Model 25s in 17 Hornet was inspired by the release of 17 Hornet ammo from Hornady. This new rifle and ammo combo provides an affordable, centerfire option for varminters who want something more powerful than the 17 HMR. Though it has low recoil, the 17 Hornet cartridge offers plenty of speed. Hornady says its new 17 Hornet ammo will push a 20gr V-Max at 3,650 fps - that's 1300 fps faster than a 17 HMR loaded with 20-grainers."

    "The 17 Hornet is based on the venerable rimmed .22 Hornet case. However, the case is not just necked-down from .22 caliber. The case designers:
    - reduced body taper
    - moved the shoulder
    - and changed the shoulder angle to 25?
    This effectively modernized the old .22 Hornet case, improving efficiency while retaining the max OAL, so that the 17 Hornet can work in any action big enough for the .22 Hornet.

    Hornady claims that its new ammo will push a 20gr V-Max bullet at 3650 fps. Dave Emary, Hornady's Senior Ballistician, says that "This is just a very efficient little cartridge. It uses half the powder of the 17 Remington, has less fouling, more barrel life, and has the felt recoil of about a .22 Magnum." Learn more by watching the video above."

    Thanks, I thought the Savage might be up and am guessing Ruger may too. I'm not a big fan of anything under 22 caliber, tiny bullets are just a pain to handle during reloading - but this seems neat.

    As one gentleman recently taught me, when I had a 17 CCM, that part of the reloading experience is making your own specific tools, and not buying them.

    A long pair of forcepts, with some split copper tubing soldered on the ends, or some split rubber or vinyl tubing epoxied to the ends make great devices for not getting big fingers like mine pinched or worse, punched in a reloading press.

    I bet that fella that told me that is getting a chuckle reading this.

    Those little 17's rock, and I will bet that Cooper also chambers it in their Model 38, of which I have a 17 Fireball in. It has accounted for a couple whitetail deer too.

    That's a good idea - when I get down around to 6mm or so the darn things are a bit difficut to hang on to, I'm especially wary of the poly tipped stuff. I'm going to try it, thank you.

    NO it is not the 17HMR It will do roughly 1000...yes 1000 FPS more than the 17 HMR.

    Iam excited. This is the first I heard about the 17 hornet. If true, I will be buying one.I have a 17 fireball and love it. I also have two 22 hornets.

    The 17AH (Ackley Hornet)has been around since the mid 90's. Cooper Arms chambered it in their small bolt action. Todd Kindler tested and wrote several glowing articles in his Small Caliber News. My Cooper shot sub 1/2MOA on calm days. Resizing new 22 Hornet brass was a one step operation. Easiest reloading was done with Wilson neck and seating dies and an arbor press. No fumbling with little bullets since the die kept them straight on top of case. I would guess the 17 Hornet to be the same dimensions as the 17AH.

    Interesting. I might actually become a .17 fan. Good idea with the forceps. I might even convert one of many from my fly fishing or aircraft tools. Soldering the half pipes on would be most helpful. As picking up the tiny bullets with the standard jaws was a bit difficult.
