Hunting Rifle

Am looking for an all around elk, moose, bear rifle. Am leaning towards 325 wsm. Greatly appreciate your input.

    243 is best ,cheaper on the pocket (ammo)[;)]

    Both are suitable for Varmints to Deer . The .243 does it's job with about 40% less powder and muzzle blast . You can buy 3 or 4 boxes of .243 ammo for about the price of one box of .257 Wby. . I guess I know why I own a .243 and no .257 Wby. The .257 might have a bit more range , but there aren't many shooters that can cash in on it , neither of them are very good wind buckers .

    IF ... a matter of choosing between those two chamberings: just the .243 or .257 Weatherby Magnum, with no other choices and no additional information, I'd take the .243 over the Weatherby. The most obvious reasons would be more gun for the money at the start, the ready availability and more reasonably priced ammunition near everywhere.

    If reloading there is and will be brass available for the .243 as it is, as well as all of the various other brass with that very common .473 base diameter. Any ready source of that base can be resized to the .243 ... ( not so with the .257 Weatherby Magnum and it's .5315 base which is not as readily obtained. ). JMPO

    Oh, and of course the move away from belted mags. for what ever that is or is not worth to ya.

    I'd suspect that the reloading equipment and components would be much more reasonablely priced for the Win .243 as well.

    If both rigs were being sold at the same price ... I might lean the other direction. Just cuz ... I have no Weatherby of my own and they are so purdy and never have. ( Have seen, handled and used some one or several but those belonged to shooting friends ... not to yours truly! )

    257 Wby mag is the reach out and touch them caliber for medium game.Simply 40-50% more of everything compared to the 243. Longest first shot kill I ever made on a coyote was with a 257 Wby @ 500 meters.

    If you have money to burn on ammo that is 4-5 bucks a round. Get the 257 WM. If dollars in your pocket are important to keep there, get the 243.

    BTW: You can buy 257 Wby 100 grain SP made by Norma with their factory bullets(as opposed to US made bullets) for around $30 per 20. You might have to buy a case of 10 boxes to get your local shop to order them. I used this ammo last year to take 3 doe deer with 3 shots. It is suitable for deer sized game and varmints. I didn't chrono this ammo but from the bench, it has more muzzle blast and recoil than my 115 grain Nosler BT's @ 3650 fps.
