Winchester Model 1895 questions...

Hello all, It has been a good few years since I last visited. I am going to be selling 20 some rifles for a client that wants to downsize his collection.

I have a couple Winchester rifles I am looking for more info on before they go up for auction. This is a Model 1895. Serial 75280. I am looking for some guestimates on value (I ask as after searching completed listing the prices fluctuate so much & I am not sure why), an idea on production date, caliber, anything that looks unusual or odd & just general info really. I am not an expert, I am just looking to list these guns accurately so any info is greatly appreciated! [:)]

Oh yea, been so long I forgot the rules on shipping rifles. I have a C&R & understand I can ship rifles via USPS that are 50 years & older, correct? I can also ship these rifles to a non FFL holder directly to their house without an FFL getting involved, this is correct also? I know I just need a copy of a drivers license to verify age...

    You have it backwards. Anyone can ship a longarm through USPS but you need a C&R or FFL dealer license to RECEIVE a C&R firearm. You can not ship directly to an individual unless it's a pre-1899 antique and not prohibited by state or local laws.

    Thanks you Spider, I had forgotten about the pre-1899 segment of the rules. Yes I remember now, & thanks! Question, what about a modern rifle, say an AK-47? Can I ship this to an FFL directly or do I need to ship it thru an FFL on my end?

    Yes, under Federal Law you can ship it but some dealers will not accept modern firearms from non-licensees. You definitely want to check with them first.

    Your 95 was manufactured in 1915 . It started life as a musket , it's chambered in 30-40 Krag . The saddle ring is missing , the rear sight is not original , and someone put a recoil pad on it a long time ago . This gun will be a hard sell as the condition isn't good , it holds little if any interest to a collector .

    Hello,

    I disagree with oneoldsap concerning the date of manufacture and its origin.

    The actual date of manufacture was October 1911, and it is a SRC (Saddle Ring Carbine) versus a Musket.

    I wholeheartedly agree that it has been significantly altered (the non-original rear sight, the cut down butt stock and recoil pad, the missing ring, and the refinished stocks), and that it has very little value. If you can get $300 for it, consider it a good day.

    I got those dates from the Winchester collectors site Bert . What year was my 92 manufactured S/N 454262 ? I was told 1907 . It's in much better condition than the one this OP posted above . Thanks Bert !

    Thanks all for the info. I am guessing my client may be a bit discouraged after I pass this on... Shall see if they make it to auction or not. I enjoy learning, love the old WInchesters. Thanks again all!

    One more thing, maybe someone can answer this. I had (not sure how many) quite a few posts in the forums from a few years ago but have been bumped back as a new user as i had not visited in some time, is this normal?

    The information on that website is not accurate. It was formulated using the erroneous information George Madis published back in the 1960s.

    Model 1892 serial number 454262 was manufactured in September of 1908.

    I am very nearly ready to publish a new (accurate) Winchester DOM book. It will not have all of the pre-1964 Winchester models in it, and there will be some serial number gaps in it. If the records do not exist, I will not publish any information for those missing serial numbers.

    sight on backwards?

    Not that I know of, I have always used the same email address & do not think I would have changed it - no reason [?]
