Stevens 77 slide issues

I have a Stevens model 77 12guage pump. When it is fired the slide does not release automaticaly. It cycles just fine when you hit the slide release button. What is wrong with this? Or is this how this gun was?

  There is a hook shaped spring attached to the slide lock. The hook
  is supposed to "catch" on a stud on the side of the hammer when fired, thus releasing the slide lock. Gonna have to remove the trigger assemble and may have to reshape the hook to correctly engage the stud on the hammer.
