Rem 870 super mag 12 gauge

It says on the barrel for 3 1/2 inch ONLY but it cycles 2 3/4 shells just fine. Would I be risking things if I used it for shorter shells, since I reload 2 3/4 steel and hevishot?

  You won't hurt a thing. I shot 2 3/4" ammo out of my Mossberg 835 all the time. Then used 3" or 3 1/2" for hunting.

  I misread the data on the barrel. It takes 2 3/4, 3 inch, and ONLY 3 1/2 inch with a magnum receiver, which is what the gun has. I thought at first it took ONLY 3 1/2 inch shells period. My bad.....
