AMT Automag 2 22 magnum
I really need some help here, picked up a AMT automag in 22 magnum at a gun show,at a real good price(never know what you get til you fire it) empties catch in the slide when firing a clip full and does not chamber a new round,if you fire single shot the slide does'nt come back far enough to kick shell out and it goes back in the chamber.Any advice on things that can be the problem? Weak spring maybe? I tried a good lube that didn't help. Any advice appreciated.

I've shot Winchester, CCI, and IIRC, Remington through mine, and have not had any issues related to the ammo. Of the three mags I have, one did not reliably feed, so I tossed it. I've probably put 500 rounds through the Automag II, and over 1,000 through the two Automag IIIs, and have yet to have a problem with any of them that wasn't magazine related.
Off-hand, I wouldn't suspect a weak spring, given that the slide doesn't return far enough to eject.
Have you completely dis-assembled and cleaned the pistol?
When you cycle the slide by hand, do you feel anything as it approach the fully retracted position?
Obviously there could be something mechanically wrong that is causing the slide to hang up, but it is basically a 1911 design.

Your follow up post states that the extractor pulls the case straight back, but it does not eject. I will try to remember to dig out my II tonight and watch the ejection sequence. Something acts as an ejector, and it seems that this is not happening in your case.

Hello some of these had chambers that were designed to "slow down the ejection of the spent cartridge case" I can't remember if small holes or grooves/flutes. Too strong of a recoil spring would give your kind of trouble. also kinkedrecoil spring or someone might have tried to install buffer. [:(!][V].The other thing is Stainless steel in semi auto guns unless the correct alloy tend to Gall. My early 44 and 357 Auto mags had this trouble. I had to polish the rails evry 20 rounds or so Finally found some Stainless Steel grease ...Take the pistol apart and with just the bare slide see if it drags on the frame, 0 -
I just went down the basement an tried it without the mag, still no good, i did notice that the ejector pulls the spent shell straight back but does not seem th release the shell so it jams. I'm writing down all the suggestions and will try to eliminate them one at a time. thanks for the responses. 0 -

I wouldn't do that. Stingers are long rifle ammo and way underpowered, not Magnum that your gun needs.
My guess would be you have some galling going on. Try a good helping of grease on the rails.

Workmanship and quality of materials on the AMT guns, weren't always up to snuff. That why so many folks including me had problems with them over the years. IMHO this was one of the main reasons they went out of business shortly after Harry Sanford passed in the late 90's.
From the description in your last post either your extractor is jamming on the rim of the cartridge, i.e. not letting it release. Or the ejector is missing or not functioning correctly.
The "High Standard" outfit in Texas who bought the rights to the AMT guns is making them again. If all else fails contact them. They might have the correct extractor/ejector? to get it to function correctly.0 -

amt 22mag has to be SQUEAKY clean especially the chamber as there are small holes drilled in it that gas comes back thru and retards the shell casing...cleanliness then look for mechanical problem...cleaner & air 0 -
You do see that the ejector is not attached to the gun? 0 -
My AMT had two problems, they caused the same results.
No 1. The end of the ejector wears and you need to replace or take it our and "peen" it a bit to make it just a bit longer. I did both, the peened one is in my box of parts.
No 2. Was the firing pin. When the safety is on and you drop the hammer on the pin it will cause a slight flairing. Then when it cycles the pin will stick in the whole just long enough for the new round to come up from under it and jam. I took a pencil and pushed my FP in and it stuck, so I pulled it out and used a file on it to reshape the head so it would not stick.
Now the gun will run any ammo just fine.0
