Stevens Stock Black Tip

I've redone some of these & used spray paint for the black tip on the stock. The paint chips easily. Any ideas as to what coating should be used for the black tip?

  I've used a Sharpie pen w/great success. At 1st it looks kinda purpleish. But when you overcoat w/clear varnish it turns ebony black.

  Or paint and Johnson's Paste Wax.

  Paint before clearing and it shouldn't chip.
